These new units were made to be mounted infantry that could move very quickly across the battlefield in order to do maximum damage to the enemy; Dragoons could dismount, fire off a volley, then ride around to another position, preferably the flank, and fire again. These hit and run tactics could cause confusion among the enemy plus deal significant damage if used properly. They were also trained cavalry men, so could charge directly at enemy troops if needed as well (National Park Services). These new troops were some of the most versatile troops to enter war at this date.
